Build A Staked Stool
with Jon HammackSunday, April 12, 2026, 12 PM - 5 PM
Join us for a woodworking class where we will build a staked stool, an early furniture form that dates back centuries. Traditional staked stools found in medieval households and early European homes are characterized by their robust mortise and tenon construction and simple yet elegant design. Students will gain hands-on experience using traditional hand tools such as hand planes, chisels, hand saws, and marking tools. This class also introduces chair-making concepts, including resultant angles, rake, and splay-fundamental skills for advancing into vernacular stick chairs. At the end of class, you’ll leave with your own handmade stool and a deeper appreciation of historical woodworking methods.
